SMART HOMES CREATING INDEPENDENCE

Living in a Smart Home was once considered a luxury, however, over the past 5 years developments in wireless technology now means it is easy to use and very affordable.

Smart Home technology is transforming lives at home, giving independence to those with impaired abilities; giving people the opportunity to complete every day tasks with minimal or no assistance.

U Control Electrical has recently completed a fit out of Z-Wave technology at the Independent Living Centre NSW Smart Home and Display at Blacktown. The Independent Living Centre NSW is a leading information, education and advisory centre for assistive technology. The centre includes a one-bedroom apartment built to Livable Housing Design Guidelines and showcases an extensive range of assistive technology options.

Shaun Kimber, Director of U Control Electrical has over 20 years of experience in electrical services and home automation, and realises the importance of offering a holistic service to clients, assessing their needs, supplying and installing home automation products to assist in everyday home tasks.

“At U Control Electrical we wanted to be able to offer a wireless home automation system that is equivalent in quality to traditional hard wired systems such as CBus, but one that is more adaptable, accessible and affordable,” explains Shaun Kimber.

So how is it done?

Z-Wave is an established and leading technology that allows smart devices to talk to one another. Through its ‘mesh network’ one product passes a signal along to another until its final destination is reached. Z-Wave will not interfere with your Wi-Fi network or other common household device signals, as it works on a completely different frequency.

Given its wireless nature, Z-Wave automation is retrofitted, allowing you to start small and build up if you require it in the future. This gives you the opportunity to automate specific rooms or zones rather than the entire house reducing your costs. Z-wave works in the background, all your light switches and devices still work as normal, however, they can also be operated through a smart phone or tablet using the power of automation.

A Smart Home is more than a home controlled via smart devices, it’s a home that can think for itself, based on parameters you set within “scenes”. You can shut down your home with the push of one button ensuring the door is locked, all windows and blinds are closed and lights switched off.

U Control Electrical client’s can expect their out of pocket expenses to be about one third of that of a traditional home automation fit out. This affordability now means Smart Home technology is now within the reach of most Australians.

If you have ability to control your smart phone or tablet through touch or voice control, the possibilities within the house are endless. With only a few small devices you can turn on your lights, call for your lift, open your electronic door, control your cooling and heating, open blinds and windows, turn on your TV, remotely unlock or even open your front door for your carer after viewing who is at the door via your IP Camera.

As the National Disability Insurance Scheme rolls out Northern Sydney in July 2017, it is important to start thinking about what you need and how you can achieve your goals to greater independence. When meeting with your planner and developing your plan contact U Control Electrical to discuss your home automation options, supporting your independent living.

“At U Control we listen to our clients needs, and will tailor smart home automation solutions to requirements. We provide a range of wireless and wired solutions to clients with impaired ability. We source and install device products, configure tailored software and provide after sales support and maintenance. As licensed electricians, we are the Sydney Specialists in Z-Wave technology”, says Shaun Kimber.
